Waikato Biodiversity Forum reports

The Forum coordinator organised two GPS workshops for community groups with funding from DOC and Waikato Regional Council. The workshops were held in Whitianga and Hamilton. The workshops were run by Jeff Williams, a member of the Moehau Environment Group and the developer of the workshops. Heather Campbell, Geospatial Information Analyst from the Department of Conservation, assisted Jeff with the workshops. The workshops covered the use of GPS handsets to reliably mark a trap, bait station, or trap line, create a data set on the handset and place the information off the handset onto a computer. Thirty-four people from 22 groups attended the workshops. Participants reported that the workshops were extremely useful and professionally facilitated.

workshops for tasman district council

Tasman District Council hosted three workshops over a three-day period. Workshops held in Richmond, Motueka, and Takaka were well-attended each day by individuals from a variety of local conservation groups. Because the workshops were held in different locations, the attendees did not have to travel more than 30 minutes to their local venue.

Biodiversity hotspots

Bay of Plenty Regional Council hosted two workshops over a weekend for conservation volunteers from Whakatane and Rotorua. In particular, the Whakatane workshop was customized to include the locally popular Garmin Rino series of GPS/radio devices.
